Episode 6: What To Expect At Your First Spin Class

gpg spin

Hey you!

I know; Steph and I look like we witnessed a murder–Not so! I took Steph to her first ever spin class on Tuesday, and the only thing that died that day were calories.

Spin can be extremely intimidating if you’ve never done it before but it can also be an incredible workout (It’s one of my favourites). The magic happens on an indoor stationary bike, and class is led by a certified instructor who may or may not want you dead.

Stick it out and you’ll leave as a satisfied bundle of lycra, sweat, and endorphins.

Here's a really great example of what you will not look like in spin class
This is a really, really great example of what you will never look like after spin.

Here’s the skinny on today’s episode:

  • You’ll sweat. Bring a towel and a water bottle.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask for help adjusting your bike. Being shy is no reason to get injured.
  • Your class will feature a mix of warm-ups, uptempo cadences, sprints, climbs, and cool-downs. During sprints you’ll wish you were climbing. During climbs you’ll wish you were sprinting. It’s a beautiful metaphor for life, really.
  • Go with the flow: Find a resistance that works for you and get into it!

Personally, I never regret going to spin. What are your thoughts? Have you ever been afraid to give it a shot? Let us know in the comments section below or @GreenGuineaPigs on Twitter.

Sounds like you have some enthusiastic spin instructors and participants! Unfortunately I’ve never experienced the yelling during class that you talk about, haha. I’m missing out!
